Stage Thrusts

What is a Stage Thrust?

A thrust is a long narrow stage that extends from the main stage area out into the audience. Historically it is one of the earliest types of staging, first used for live theatre events hundreds of years ago. It was originally designed to allow the audience to be seated around the stage on three sides giving them a closer view of the live performance. Its purpose today is more varied and depends on the type of show that is being presented.

Thrust or Extension?

The difference between a stage thrust and an extension is that the thrust is long and narrow, providing space for a small number of performers like models on a catwalk. It usually has provision for seating on three sides and puts the performance or display out among the crowd. An extension can be any size or shape. It may be the full width of the main stage and used to increase the size of the performance or display area. An extension can be curved or angled and designed as a feature or it can be incorporated into the overall stage design to create a custom shape. While the size, shape, and application of stage extensions are virtually unlimited, thrusts have a more defined size, shape, and range of purposes.

Popular Uses

A stage thrust can be used in a variety of events and shows to provide a more inclusive experience for the audience or to provide them with a closer view of the action. One of the more common uses is as a catwalk or runway for fashion shows. The thrust extends into the audience, giving them a close up view of the fashion pieces from different angles as they are paraded by the models. Thrusts are sometimes used by singers, bands, and comedians in their live performances so that they can get out into the crowd and create a more personal, interactive show.

They can be used to stage demonstrations, product launches, and displays, providing easy access and a clear view from all sides for event goers. A stage thrust can be set up as a dining table for catering events and demonstrations where tastings are involved. With the use of a thrust, event hosts, guest speakers and presenters can get closer to their audience, creating a more intimate ambiance when interacting with them.

Megadeck Makes It

We can build a stage thrust to extend seamlessly from any size, shape, or height stage. Whatever the size or height of your existing staging, the Megadeck creative team can tailor a stage thrust to fit perfectly. Where necessary, we can construct a thrust over any obstacles that may be present at the venue. Existing seating, bars, ramps, or other obstructions can have a thrust stage built over them, making the most of available space.

When your event requires a long, narrow stage for models to strut their stuff or for an interactive performance or demonstration, Megadeck has got you covered. For single performers, hosts, or speakers a 1.2m wide thrust is ideal. This size is perfect as a catwalk where a single model is on stage at a time, for a solo performer or as a display platform. When multiple people will be on the stage in a live play, dance show or fashion parade, a 2.4m or wider platform is the perfect solution.
